Steve Laforet    [aka “Slick Steve”]

 [keys, vocals]

Steve Laforet, keyboardist for Brand X has been playing in local bands for more than thirty years. He started out as the singer and keyboard player in an Italian wedding band (rather interesting, considering he's French!). From there, he joined a very successful wedding group called Cavalon, which included several musicians over the years, including saxophonist Ray Manzerolle, Glen Muir, and Dave Michaud, just to name a few.

A few years later, he met up with Randy Gagnon and became a part of the New Canadian Breed. His first taste of playing Rock ‘n’ Roll on stage was with Mike Hereford and the Jets. During that time, the band performed on a nationally televised rock band competition: The Fame Game.

Not long after, (in and around the summer of '84) Steve met up with Dennis Solet, a lead singer with whom he had performed in the Jets and was now the front man for Brand X, and discussed getting together and forming a new band. Dennis mentioned that Brand X was looking for a keyboardist and a drummer. Steve knew that Mark Hewer, also a former mutual band member, was available. The rest, as they say, is history.

At that time, the band played pretty much only in the county; the Sunnyside, Fox Glen Golf Club, and of course, the Anderdon Tavern. With Mark Hewer, Ron Carriere on bass, Dennis Solet singing , Ken Koekstat on guitar, and Steve on keys, the band was never at a loss for work. They also played at several special functions and charitable events.

Steve remembers sharing the stage with the Drifters for an evening with Hospice at the Ciociaro Club, playing at the riverfront many times over the years for Freedomfest, Festival Epicure, Elvis Weekend, performing for Windsor Police Chief Glenn Stannard's Retirement Roast, the Tomato Fest in Leamington, the Peach Festival in Harrow, the Strawberry Fest in LaSalle, to name just a few.

He considers himself fortunate to have met so many great people over the years, and to have played with so many fine musicians. He also considers Ken to have been a very strong influence in his life and even chose him as the godfather for his oldest son. Steve has been married for over 21 years and has four children. He has been teaching at the elementary level for almost 26 years.
